Plagiarism or tribute?, nanimarquina

Storytelling

This article was commissioned by the designer rug brand nanimarquina, and was written in response to a clear case of plagiarism; a difficult subject to tackle, which I had less than half a day to address.

Plagiarism or tribute?

In this contemporary, hyper-connected society with access to an almost unlimited amount of information, plagiarism is a recurrent and difficult-to-manage issue. However, with the plethora of designs and creations around us, how should we interpret copying? Is it a sign of admiration or of dishonesty?

It is important to us that our customers understand the work of the people we collaborate with, and how valuable creating something original is. After all, we rely on designers and craftspeople, as well as young talents and artists, to broaden perspectives and create design pieces that last over time and improve our well-being.

nanimarquina produces one of the world's most widely copied designs: the Marquina oil cruet. This iconic piece was designed in 1961 by Nani Marquina's father, Rafael Marquina, one of the pioneers of industrial design in Spain. The Marquina oil cruet, now a global household item, is edited by nanimarquina, guaranteeing its authenticity.

When you buy nanimarquina, you invest in the future of design, the preservation of culture, a cultural legacy, recognising the research and design work of our team of experts and designers and the craftsmanship of the artisans behind it. From the sheep breeder to the shearer, the spinner, the dyer and the weaver. By buying nanimarquina you invest in the woven stories that make each rug an original piece.

nanimarquina is a member company of Be Original Americas, a non-profit committed to informing, educating and influencing manufacturers, design professionals and consumers on the economic, ethical, and environmental value of authentic design. Buy original, avoid copying.
